Gospel according to Matthew 16:13–20
At that time: When Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, ‘Who do people say that the Son of Man is?’ And they said, ‘Some say John the Baptist, others say Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.’ He said to them, ‘But who do you say that I am?’ Simon Peter replied, ‘You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.’ And Jesus answered him, ‘Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my Church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.’ Then he strictly charged the disciples to tell no one that he was the Christ.
His domestic Church.
What confidence and security these words give us: “Upon this rock I will build my Church.” It is not Peter, nor Paul, nor any of His priests or bishops who hold the helm of the Church; it is the Lord. Amid the tide of ideas, trends, opinions and ideologies, we know where the Truth is, where we can find our own truth so that we can follow a sure path; and, what is more, we can meet the Lord every day in the Eucharist. What peace we find in our hearts when we spend some time before the Lord, present in the monstrance on the altar.
In our marriage, we can also ask ourselves the same question: What do people say that marriage is? The answers we hear are much the same in every age: that it is for life, that there is no point in getting married, that it is only “until it lasts”… But the Lord tells us again that marriage is a gift given to us, the wonderful plan He has for each of us, the rock upon which He builds a communion of life and love, His domestic Church, which the powers of hell will not overcome. Our spouse, whom we married so deeply in love, has been chosen from all eternity to be the right companion to help us journey towards the Lord, towards Heaven.
Spouses, do not be afraid! He is always with us, watching over us and caring for our marriage; and even when everything seems lost, He remains faithful to His promise: the devil will not overcome it.
Brought down to married life
Patricia: Stephen, I was praying this morning and thinking about us, our marriage, how we have gone through different stages and circumstances, and how much we have grown over the past few years.
Stephen: It’s true. When we look back, we realise what a wonderful journey it has been, even with all the obstacles and crosses along the way.
Patricia: Yes, we got married very much in love, but we wanted to do everything through our own strength. Then the first obstacles came: struggles, misunderstandings, difficulties that even began to shake our marriage.
Stephen: There were times when I thought it wasn’t worth all the effort.
Patricia: Of course. We wanted to build our marriage on our own. Then we discovered the Lord, and He showed us that He was already in our midst, but we hadn’t been counting on Him.
Stephen: And it took us time to realise that He was making everything new, that He was the rock upon which we needed to build our lives.
Patricia: Little by little, we learnt that He never abandons us and that He is always by our side; it is we who become careless and fail to let Him accompany us.
Stephen: But look at us. Despite everything we have lived through, and everything still to come, we have discovered marriage as God intended it: our own marriage, how He wants to see us and how He wants us to love one another, with that self-giving love that makes us truly happy.
Patricia: Listening to you, I can’t help but give thanks to God for your love. I love you so much!
Stephen: And I love you too. Every day I find you more beautiful, especially when you say things like that. I thank God for giving me such a wonderful wife. Mwah!
Mother,
Watch over us so that we may never become separated from the Lord, and may our marriage always be built upon Him. Blessed and praised be the Lord!
