Let it Be Seen. Reflections for Married Couples. Luke 1: 26-38

Gospel of the Day

From the Gospel according to Luke 1: 26–38
At that time: The angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. And the virgin’s name was Mary. And he came to her and said, ‘Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with you!’ But she was greatly troubled at the saying, and tried to discern what sort of greeting this might be. And the angel said to her, ‘Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favour with God. And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. And the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob for ever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.’
And Mary said to the angel, ‘How will this be, since I am a virgin?’ And the angel answered her, ‘The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy — the Son of God. And behold, your relative Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son, and this is the sixth month with her who was called barren. For nothing will be impossible with God.’ And Mary said, ‘Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.’ And the angel departed from her.

Let it Be Seen

The Annunciation reminds us of something beautiful: God is still looking for hearts and lives in which He can make Himself present.

Mary was at home, in the midst of her simple life and her daily tasks, when God entered her story. The Virgin did not understand how everything was going to happen, and yet God found in her a heart that was available to Him. Through her “yes”, Mary allowed God to make Himself present in the world.

In our marriages too, God is still looking for husbands and wives who are available, where His Love can become flesh.

For this, we need to live in God’s grace and to remain attentive to the concrete moments of each day. God can become present in a conversation when we are patient and kind; in a caress that makes His tenderness present; in a difficulty that we embrace without rebelling; in a decision in which we turn to Him; in forgiveness; in the care we give to our children…

We do not need to wait for something extraordinary to happen. God continues to enter our story, right where we are and just as we are, because nothing is impossible for God.

He can work precisely through our poverty, our limitations and even our wounds, when we place them in His hands.

The Lord wants His Love to become life in us.

Mary teaches us that a heart which is available to God can become His dwelling place. And we too can become a dwelling place where Christ makes His Love visible: His patience, His tenderness, His kindness, His mercy, His forgiveness…

Can my husband or wife find something of this in me today?

Am I allowing the Love of Jesus to become flesh in me?

Brought Down to Married Life

Sara: Have you seen my charger?

David: No! Why do I always have to know where your things are?

Sara: It’s alright, love. I just wondered if you’d seen it. I’ve been looking for it for a while.

David: Well, look a bit harder. I can’t keep track of everything.

Sara: Okay. You carry on tidying up and I’ll keep looking. Have you eaten anything?

David: No.

Sara: I’ll make you something while I’m looking… Then I’ll help you with that.

David: I’m sorry. I’ve had an awful day.

Sara: I thought you might have. Come on, don’t worry. Give me a kiss!

David: Thank you, Sara. Today I saw Jesus in you.

Prayer

Mother,

How beautiful it would be if, when our spouse looked at us, they could feel just a little closer to Jesus.
