Daily Gospel – Matthew 5:13–19
A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew
At that time, Jesus said to his disciples:
“You are the salt of the earth. But if salt becomes tasteless, with what can it be seasoned? It is no longer good for anything but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.
“You are the light of the world. A city built on a hilltop cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp to put it under a tub; they put it on the lampstand where it shines for everyone in the house. In the same way your light must shine in the sight of others, so that, seeing your good works, they may give praise to your Father in heaven.
“Do not imagine that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets. I have come not to abolish but to complete them. I tell you solemnly, till heaven and earth disappear, not one dot, not one little stroke, shall disappear from the Law until its purpose is achieved. Therefore, the one who infringes even one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be considered the least in the Kingdom of Heaven; but the one who keeps them and teaches them will be considered great in the Kingdom of Heaven.”
Communion that Evangelises
In this Gospel, Jesus calls us to be the salt of the earth and the light of the world, and this begins in the intimacy of our marriage. Before we illuminate others, we as husband and wife are called to be a light for one another. Before giving flavour to the world, we are invited to keep the love of our covenant alive through faithfulness, forgiveness, tenderness, and thoughtfulness in everyday life.
Today, husband, I ask you: Am I salt for you, or have I allowed routine to take hold of our communion? Am I light for you, or do my words, my silences, or my attitudes cast shadows over our journey towards Christ?
Living the Law of Christ in its fullness within marriage means choosing each day humility, mercy, peace, and self-giving in our home, allowing the grace of the Sacrament to transform our hearts. In this way, our love does not remain enclosed between us but becomes a visible witness to our children, our family, and all those around us. Remaining faithful to this Covenant helps us lead one another to an ever deeper encounter with Christ.
Applying it to Married Life
Álvaro: Macarena, this Gospel has made me realise that we both wanted to be a light for others, but between ourselves we were competing to prove who had the deeper spirituality.
Macarena: That’s true, Álvaro. Instead of seeking communion, we kept trying to convince each other. We wanted to draw closer to Christ, but we had not yet discovered that He was also calling us to walk together towards Him.
Álvaro: And because of that, it was difficult to bear fruit. How could we be the salt of the earth if there was no communion between us? How could we be the light of the world if our differences only highlighted our pride?
Macarena: I can only thank the Lord that, since He showed us this path to holiness through our marriage, everything has changed. Now I no longer try to impose my way of living the faith on you. Instead, I seek to encounter Christ through you, Álvaro.
Álvaro: And that’s the difference, Macarena. Now that we strive to live in communion, our marriage truly reflects Christ.
Macarena: Yes, Álvaro. Now we understand that we are first called to be salt and light for one another. And from that unity, the Lord begins to bear fruit and touch the hearts of those around us.
Prayer
Mother,
help us to live in communion so that we may be the salt of the earth and the light of the world. Through our spouse, may we grow ever more united to Christ each day and reflect His love. Blessed and praised be the Lord for ever. Amen.
